Mutual Aid Groups in Austin Texas

People gathering donations, sharing resources, and supporting each other in a community center in Austin, Texas

January 20th marks a grim milestone: one year since the first case of novel coronavirus was identified in the US. As the pandemic continues, many families face financial uncertainty. Throughout Austin, a number of mutual aid programs have been established to help citizens stay on their feet in these uncertain times.

The following selections range from food assistance to supporting the local arts, to providing general aid for those in need; they all fall under the umbrella of mutual aid groups near me.

ATX Free Food Sharing

ATX Free Food Sharing is a Facebook group dedicated to providing mutual aid, and to the feeding of Austin’s citizens. Approved members can post requests for items they need. Members may also create posts offering assistance to others. Click Here to join.

ATX Free Fridge Project

This initiative provides fully-stocked community fridges, available to the public 24/7 throughout the city of Austin. Fridges supply everything from vegetables, breads, frozen foods, prepared meals, canned goods, and even baking supplies. Hand sanitizer is also currently being provided at these locations. Fridges are currently located outside Nixta Taqueria at 12th and Cedar, as well as at Unit C Studio and Gallery on 2nd Street. Click Here to follow the Project on Instagram for future updates.

ATX Mutual Aid Collective

Founded by the Primrose Community Care center, this Facebook group provides information, resources and aid-sharing opportunities to the Austin community. Members may request assistance or provide help to others. Click Here to follow the Collective on Facebook for future updates.

The Artists Emergency Relief Fund

Founded by the Austin Creative Alliance, this fund seeks to assist artists in the Greater Austin area who find themselves facing an uncertain future in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Upwards of $150,000 in donations have been raised so far–however, the fund’s goal is $2.5 million, the estimated sum necessary to support its 1,300+ applicants. Forkout

Forkout is an Austin-based charity dedicated to sharing food surplus with those experiencing food insecurity. The group certifies its delivery employees through ServSafe, and is currently accepting volunteers–nicknamed “Forkers”–to aid with deliveries.

Good Apple

Good Apple is a local food pantry dedicated to providing fresh, local produce to Austinites in need. The pantry rescues produce that would normally go unsold due to cosmetic defects. Boxes are curated weekly from local seasonal produce, including fruits, vegetables and herbs. For each box purchased, a box is donated to an Austin family facing food insecurity. As we head into the future, good will and aid towards our fellow citizens are perhaps more important than ever. We hope these selections will provide inspiration and hope to you during these difficult times.
