Spring Cleaning Campaign to Revitalize Downtown Austin
Nearly 14 months since the start of the COVID pandemic, the Lone Star’s capital is undergoing a massive revitalization effort to prepare for the city’s reopening.
To spruce up the capitol’s “front of house”, the Downtown Austin Alliance and Visit Austin are partnering with the city’s hospitality industry to tidy and refresh Austin’s cultural landmarks and major tourist destinations. Some two hundred volunteers are set to participate in the program, which launched this past Tuesday, May 25th. Cleanup endeavours include the renewal of planters with fresh flowers, mulch and greenery, cleaning of sidewalks and public fixtures such as bike racks, benches and waste bins, and cleaning graffiti from downtown murals and monuments.
The Director of Operations for the Downtown Austin Alliance is Matt Macioge, who issued the following statement regarding the new “Spring Cleaning” initiative.
“We know that people love coming here, and we want that return to work and downtown to be seamless and smooth. Our ambassador team will be leading the efforts, and working individually with each group to ensure that they understand what the goals are, how we actually go about cleaning an urban core environment and making sure that the place just looks fantastic.”
As vaccine rollouts reach a crescendo and COVID cases sit at their lowest points since March of 2020, hopes are high for a thriving summer in the tourism sector. Stay tuned to Mount Bonnell for the latest news, lists and advice on how best to enjoy all Austin has to offer.
