There are quite a few amazing state parks in Austin, most of which can be found within the city itself. These parks are the perfect retreat for those who enjoy biking, hiking, or a refreshing afternoon swim.

The parks on our list are some of Austin’s most popular spots. Perfect for families and sport enthusiasts alike, they can be enjoyed with minimal equipment or prior training.

Pedernales Falls State Park

An iconic river that flows through Texas Hill County, just west of the city itself. The falls feature limestone cliffs, giant boulders, waterfalls, and a limestone riverbed.

The park is named after the river and features substantial trails for hiking and cycling. Trails range from easy to challenging, so there’s something for everyone. Additional activities include fishing, bouldering, biking and geocaching.

Palmetto State Park

Upon entering this reserve, you’ll find yourself in the classic epitome of deep south scenery. Palmetto features a forest of tropical palmetto plants, towering trees, and lush swamps emblematic of the deep south. Popular activities include tubing, canoeing, and fishing. On land, trails are available for hiking and biking.

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area

This is a place like no other in Texas. The park features a giant, pink granite boulder that seems to rise out of nowhere, granting the state park its name. The lush, green hills surrounding this area just make the image more beautiful and strange to behold.

The area is perfect for watching the sun rise, or for a relaxing evening of stargazing. 11 miles of trails offer ample opportunity to explore the area on foot or by bike. Camp grounds are also available, offering the chance sleep under the starlit Texan sky.

Bastrop State Park & The Lost Pines

This park is the furthest distance from Austin, located about 30 miles outside of the city. It’s best known for the pines that can be found in abundance around the hiking trails of the park. Sadly, many of the trees were destroyed in 2011 in a devastating wildfire, but nature is resilient and there is still much beauty to behold here.

Emma Long Metropolitan Park

Emma Long is another selection that’s a bit of a drive from Austin’s city center, but it’s definitely a trip worth taking. The journey to Emma Long takes roughly 25 minutes, and is located on Lake Austin. The park features twelve miles of bicycle and hiking trails that are open to the public to explore. These trails are markedly safe to access, and are great for a relaxing stroll after swimming or boating in the lake.
